What is the Caldies Big Dig?

The Caldies Big Dig is part of the ongoing Connect at Calderstones project which is being carried out by The Reader Organisation to help secure Heritage Lottery Funding to restore the Grade II listed Calderstones Mansion House.

During the spring of 2015 we will carry out a community archaeological dig inviting members of the public to get involved.

Why are we digging Calderstones?

Calderstones Park is home to the oldest human monument in Liverpool – The Calder Stones, which are 5000 years old and are thought to be the remains of a stone-age passage grave.

What is more it has been a private estate for wealthy Liverpool merchants and has been a public park for over 100 years.

As the park has never been built on this is the perfect opportunity to see if there is anything else beneath the ground to tell us more of the history of this park.

How can I get involved?

As spaces on The Big Dig are strictly limited, all those interested are advised to register. See the Register page for all the information on how to do this.
